History of a Name

During the 1700s, the Cross Keys Tavern, located on the corner of Queen and Dorchester Streets in Charlottetown, was a popular local venue. The Legislative Assembly allegedly held their first meeting at the tavern on July 7, 1773.

Later, in 1797, the location became the meeting place of the Saint John’s Masonic Lodge, with General Fanning, the second governor of the Island of Saint John, being one of its prominent members.

Its function notwithstanding, the Cross Keys was unquestionably a gathering place for animated discussion of topics of the day. In this vein, we would like to keep alive the “sport” of PEI’s political history. Come join us amid our gallery in celebration of the political history of Prince Edward Island.
